Attorney Artie Vaughn

Attorney Artie Vaughn has associated with The Law Offices of Richard V. Stevens, P.C. in an “of counsel” capacity.  He also maintains his own, independent, military defense law practice – Vaughn Defense.  Artie served more than 11 years as an attorney on active duty in the U.S. Air Force.  This included serving as a military base defense counsel in which he was rated the #1 litigator and defense counsel in his region.  In addition to his civilian military defense practice, Artie continues to serve as a lieutenant colonel (O-5) in the U.S. Air National Guard as a regional defense counsel for the southeast region. 

Artie has substantial experience in military courts-martial, administrative boards, disciplinary actions, adverse actions, and investigations.  As of 2023, Artie has handled approximately 100 military proceedings to include General Courts-Martial; Administrative Separation Boards; Air Force Personnel Boards; Flying Evaluation Boards; Medical Evaluation Boards; and Aircrew Evaluation Boards.  In his career to date, Artie has advised on, and/or defended, thousands of military justice actions, including allegations of:

  • Assault and battery / aggravated assault (Article 128)
  • Sexual assault / abusive sexual contact / rape (Article 120)
  • Attempted murder (Article 80 and Article 118)
  • Drug offenses of all kinds (Article 112a)
  • Larceny (Article 121) and fraud (Article 132)

Artie has more than 1,200 hours instructing at the Air Force JAG School where he taught attorneys, commanders, and paralegals from all service branches in the areas of trial advocacy, leadership, administrative actions, and military criminal law.  His previous employment and assignments have included: 

  • Area Defense Counsel (base level) – routinely named as the #1 litigator and defense counsel in his region
  • Earned an LL.M. in Military Law with a Criminal Law Specialty – rated “Superior” in leadership and written communication
  • Division Chief of Military Justice at the Air Force Judge Advocate General’s School
  • Title IX Investigator with Auburn University – routinely conducted interviews and investigations of issues involving sexual assault, sexual harassment, and discrimination involving students, faculty, and staff, including ROTC detachments
